Dog Training Basics

Puppies, as well as older dogs, come with a lot of things. A lot of smiles for you, tail wagging, and slobbery kisses, true. They also come with either a lack of training altogether, or training that needs to be changed. Depending on how old your dog is when you get him, you’re going to have to do a lot of work in training him to be the perfect dog for you, as well as for your life.

Lots of people just don’t realize how important it is to train your dog, and to do it correctly. Folks who have little dogs probably think that since their dog is small it doesn’t matter if the dog jumps up on people. However, without training small dogs might become ankle biters, and might dig or create other problems at home. Big dogs, no matter how friendly, will probably jump on people without proper training, and can cause quite a ruckus at home if they don’t have anything to fall back on. It’s tough to live your life with an untrained dog, so training is very important. You want to be able to trust your dog to be the type of dog you really know he can be, and its only through training that he’ll be that way.

It’s also important to train your dog because you have to know that you can trust him to behave. A relationship between master and dog only really comes with training, and no matter how much you want to have your dog for a buddy or a pal, it is very important to make sure that your dog recognizes you as the leader of the pack. Dogs are programmed to have a leader, no matter what, and to have a ranking in the pack. If you don’t train your dog properly, he might grow to think that his ranking is higher than yours within the pack, and this can lead to major problems. A dog that isn’t trained is likely to misbehave whenever he gets the chance, and is also likely to become aggressive towards you or towards others.

It’s important to train your dog, and it is important to do it right. Yelling at your dog or hitting him, or locking him in closets when he misbehaves is the worst training that you could do, because this causes your dog to resent you, and perhaps to become aggressive at you or others. It’s also hard to forge a bond with your dog unless you understand how his mind works, and the only way to understand how a dog’s mind works is to train them, and train them correctly.

For all of these reasons, it’s important to train your dog, and to do it as well as you can. Professional help usually isn’t that hard, and even basic training can be easy for you to pick up on, by yourself.
