Getting a dog can be an exciting time in your life. While many people have shared great experiences with “man’s best friend” over the years, they might have not had a dog since they were a child. For whatever reason, they let the hustle and bustle of life get in the way. They kept putting off picking a dog of their own, thinking that they don’t have time for one.

The truth is that there has never been a better time than now to get a dog. There are numerous shelters and breeders around the world that have exactly the dog you’ve been thinking about getting. From border collies to teacup yorkies, there are a lot of different breeds that would make a great pet. The majority of people in the world love the loyalty and energy of a dog. There is nothing quite like seeing that “smiling” dog face looking at you when you get home. Their genuine excitement to see you every single day is unmatched with anyone else.  They have a way of making you feel better in nearly every situation. After a long day of work, being greeted by a cold nose and thick fur is a great way to relieve stress and tension.

When picking a dog and deciding if it’s right for you, there are a number of different factors that you should consider. Owning a puppy is a big commitment and it will take some investment of your time and money. Do you have the time that is required to own a puppy? Do you have time to take it for walk every day? Will you remember to water and feed them daily?  Do you have extra money for food, vet bills, and dog toys? Some things to consider before you drive down to the shelter are your living arrangements and the quality of life that the dog will experience.

If you live in a tiny little apartment that doesn’t allow pets, this might not be the ideal situation to bring a dog into. You’ll want to be close to an area that has plenty of room for your dog to play. If you have a backyard, that is great. If you live in the country, it’s even better.

If you decide that getting a dog is something that you want to try, then you’ll need to think about what type of dog you want. Is it going to be an inside dog? Will you let it roam free in the yard? Do you want an attack dog, or one that is great with little children? These are all factors that you have to look at when picking a dog breed. Many dogs are great with children while others are dangerous. Some dogs are standoffish with new people, which would not be good for those that like to entertain.

Once you decide on a breed, you also need to figure out what type of individual dog you want. If you get dog that is no longer a puppy, you can find out their tendencies from their previous owner. You can get a list of their habits, likes, and dislikes. This will allow you to pick the exact type of dog that fits your routine. However, if you want to start from scratch, a puppy is the way to go. Their cute little face and paws are hard to resist, however each one will have its own personality, so be prepared.
